A 17-year-old female who tragically lost her life after departing a police vehicle on the M5 has been identified.
Tamzin Hall, a resident of Wellington, passed away after being struck by a car driving southward between junction 24 for Bridgwater and junction 25 for Taunton shortly after 11 PM on Monday, November 11.
She left the police car as it stopped on the northbound side of the motorway while transporting her.
A mandatory referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is currently conducting its own inquiry into the incident.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) stated: ‘At the time, Tamzin Hall was being escorted by two officers to a custody suite at Bridgwater in a police car from a location in Taunton.
‘The police vehicle halted on the northbound carriageway between junctions 25 and 24 just before 11 PM.
‘At this juncture, Tamzin exited the vehicle and shortly thereafter was involved in a collision with a civilian’s car on the southbound carriageway. Although an ambulance was summoned, and paramedics arrived within minutes, Tamzin tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene.’
IOPC director David Ford remarked: ‘This is an extraordinarily tragic event, and my thoughts are with Tamzin’s family, friends, and all those impacted by the circumstances of that evening.
‘We are reaching out to her family to express our condolences, clarify our role, and outline how our investigation will unfold. We will keep them fully informed as our inquiry progresses.’
‘Our duty is to independently examine all the aspects surrounding this incident.’
‘Upon being informed by Avon and Somerset Police, we dispatched our investigators to the police post-incident protocol to commence evidence collection.’
Avon and Somerset Police expressed: ‘Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences go out to Tamzin’s family during this incredibly difficult time.’
‘A specially trained family liaison officer is in continuous contact with them to keep them informed and provide assistance.’
‘The family has requested privacy during this challenging period.’
