One individual has lost their life, and 16 others sustained injuries in a shooting incident at a university in the United States.
The homecoming festivities at Tuskegee University in Alabama were overshadowed by the violence on campus early Sunday morning.
An 18-year-old male succumbed to injuries from the attack. He was not enrolled at the university; however, several of the injured were students there.
Of the 16 victims, authorities confirmed that 12 incurred injuries from gunfire.
“The family of the deceased has been informed. Numerous others, including students from Tuskegee University, are undergoing medical treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery,” stated the university in an official release.
No arrests have been reported as of yet, and the FBI has been brought in to assist with the investigation.
The injured included a female student with a gunshot wound to her abdomen and a male student who suffered an arm injury, as reported by the city’s police chief, Patrick Mardis.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation indicated that its agents were alerted about multiple gunshot victims around 1:40 AM and are currently gathering further details.

Mr. Mardis noted that officers were responding to an unconnected double shooting off campus when they received the report about the university incident.
The shooting transpired as the historic black university’s centennial homecoming week was concluding.
Consequently, all classes scheduled for Monday have been canceled.
Amare Hardee, president of the university’s student government association, remarked: “This senseless act of violence has impacted each of us, either directly or indirectly.”
