Prince William has provided his most definitive statement yet regarding his vision for the monarchy’s operation – indicating his approach involves “a smaller R in the royal.”
The Prince of Wales discussed his intent to “approach it differently” while preparing to depart Cape Town after his week-long tour in South Africa, highlighting his belief that there should be “greater empathetic leadership across the globe.”
In response to inquiries about whether he is intentionally undertaking tours and royal engagements in an unconventional manner, William remarked: “I can merely articulate what I aim to achieve, which is to approach it differently, targeting my generation.”
“To provide you with deeper insight, I am striving to do so with perhaps a diminished R in the royal, if you will, that might better express what I mean.”
Expanding on what this signifies for him, the 42-year-old expressed: “It revolves more around impactful philanthropy, collaboration, gathering, and assisting others.”
“I would also include empathy because I genuinely value my work. It positively influences people’s lives. I believe we could certainly benefit from more compassionate leadership globally.”
Discussing his particular initiatives concerning environmental issues and homelessness, along with his potential future role, the heir to the throne stated: “That’s what I am striving to implement, along with Catherine.
“Currently, I am engaged in Earthshot and various projects like Homewards. Who can say what lies ahead, yet it all revolves around those principles of striving to enact change and enhance lives.”
In the same discussion, Prince William mentioned the “challenging” nature of the past year, marked by his wife and father being diagnosed with cancer.
When asked if Kate might accompany him for additional engagements and visits, he alluded to the prospect of more international travel.

“I am hopeful that Catherine will partake a bit more next year, so perhaps we’ll have additional trips planned.”
However, when questioned about the children accompanying them for more responsibilities, he responded: “In terms of family, you’ll need to wait a little longer, as they are currently in school, which I believe takes precedence over everything else.”
Prince William spoke at the conclusion of his visit to South Africa to commemorate the fourth anniversary of his annual Earthshot Prize.
On Saturday evening, he was joined by the Princess of Wales as they arrived at the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.
