A five-year-old child tragically drowned in a pool during a family vacation in Egypt, an inquest has revealed.
Kelan Logan-Derench, hailing from Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, was discovered at the bottom of a hotel pool in Cairo, lacking his armbands, on 25 November of the previous year.
The Birmingham and Solihull Coroner’s Court was informed that Kelan was retrieved from the water but tragically succumbed at the El Nile Hospital.
In a formal written inquest determination, senior coroner Louise Hunt concluded that Kelan’s death was a result of an unfortunate accident.
He was affectionately characterized by a family friend as a “cheeky, spirited, joyful little boy”.
Kelan was vacationing with his relatives at the Mirette Hotel in Hurghada, as stated in the inquest records.
He was located around 12:05 PM, with resuscitation efforts initiated immediately.
Drowning was cited as the medical cause of his passing.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched by Serena Whitehead, a friend of Kelan’s mother, shortly after his tragic demise.

Nearly £20,000 was collected to assist with the transportation of his remains back to the UK and to aid with funeral expenses.
“Kelan was a cheeky, spirited, joyful little boy, a younger sibling to Cienna and was eagerly awaiting to become a big brother himself in February 2024,” Ms. Whitehead wrote.
As per the fundraising page, Kelan’s life was cut short just a day after the commencement of his holiday with his mother, sister, and grandmother.
