An eight-year-old child has tragically passed away after sustaining “severe” injuries to his head and face during an incident involving a firearm at a farm.
In a statement, Cumbria Police reported: “Authorities are conducting an investigation following the death of an eight-year-old boy.
“Emergency services were alerted at approximately 2:50 PM yesterday (28 Sept) to a farm in the Warcop region after receiving a report that a child had been critically injured by a weapon on the premises.
“Officers from the police and NWAS responded. The gun was secured at the location by law enforcement, and the eight-year-old boy was transported to the hospital via air ambulance, having sustained serious and life-threatening injuries to his head and face.
“Regrettably, the boy passed away overnight.
“A man in his sixties has been apprehended at the location on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He is currently in police custody and is now being held on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.”
