It has been 23 years since the tragic discovery of 21-year-old Vicky Glass’s body in the quiet village of Danby, North Yorkshire, but her murder remains unsolved. Despite numerous arrests at the time, no one has ever been charged in connection with Vicky’s disappearance or death.
The case was given new life in 2021 when investigators relaunched efforts to find answers. A key focus of the renewed inquiry is identifying a lorry driver seen with Vicky shortly before her disappearance. Detectives hope that with time, someone with vital information may feel compelled to come forward.
“We hope that allegiances have changed over the years,” police said. “We are appealing to anyone who knows something to find it in their heart to get in touch and tell us what they know.”
The Night Vicky Vanished
Vicky Glass was last seen in the early hours of September 24, 2000, just three days after celebrating her 21st birthday. A taxi driver dropped her off in Middlesbrough at around 4:00 a.m. That was the last time she was seen alive.
Six weeks later, her mutilated body was discovered in a stream in Danby, a remote location more than 30 miles away from where she was last seen. The brutality of the crime shocked the community, and despite extensive efforts, the case quickly went cold.
Renewed Hope in the Hunt for the Lorry Driver
In a bid to revive the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Peter Carr and his team returned to Danby in 2022 following new CCTV evidence that had come to light. The footage showed Vicky in the company of a lorry driver just hours before her disappearance.
“Someone out there knows something,” said DCI Carr. “I urge that person to come forward and speak to us. Help us find out what happened to Vicky—not for us, but for her grieving family.”
Officers have spoken to hundreds of people in their renewed appeal, but the lorry driver’s identity remains elusive.
A Plea for Justice
As the 23rd anniversary of Vicky’s death passes, Cleveland Police continue their efforts to bring the truth to light. They remain hopeful that someone holds the key to solving this enduring mystery somewhere.
The police urge anyone with information to come forward in the hope that Vicky’s family might finally receive the closure they deserve.
