In the Polish locale of Zagan, time is of the essence.
Leaks have emerged in one of the flood barriers, prompting the military to act swiftly to seal them.
A chain of soldiers passes sandbags between themselves until they arrive at the compromised zone, casting them into the waters below.
If they cannot manage to mitigate the water flow, the tumultuous river beyond the barrier may breach it and overwhelm the streets behind.
“For this town, the next 24 hours are pivotal. If the water levels decrease within that timeframe, then everything will be alright,” states General Piotr Fajkowski, leader of the 11th armored cavalry division.
For a number of residences, assistance has unfortunately come too late.
The floodwaters arrived overnight, inundating basements, creeping around the town’s power station, and submerging the local park.
Danuta’s family has received orders to evacuate their residence.
While her children have been relocated to safety, she plans to remain for the time being.
“I have never encountered anything like this, so I am taken aback, but I remain hopeful,” she remarks while stacking sandbags at her doorway.
