The acclaimed British series Baby Reindeer emerged as a significant victor at this year’s Emmy Awards, with Shogun making history and notable achievements for The Bear and Hacks.
Richard Gadd, the creator and star of the renowned yet contentious drama Baby Reindeer, secured awards for both writing and acting in the limited series category. Meanwhile, co-star Jessica Gunning received the accolade for best supporting actress.
The Japanese historical drama Shogun made history as the first non-English language production to be awarded as the best drama and set a new record for the highest number of wins in a single season Emmy wins, garnering four trophies on the evening for a total of 18, adding to previous accolades collected at the creative arts event earlier in the month.
The Bear secured four awards within the comedy categories, featuring victories for cast members Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colon-Zayas, while Hacks triumphed as the best comedy series overall.
Additionally, Elizabeth Debicki celebrated her first Emmy win for her role as Diana, Princess of Wales, in the dramatized royal series The Crown. Jodie Foster, who has previously won Oscars, also received her inaugural Emmy for best lead actress in a limited or anthology series for her performance in True Detective: Night Country.

While accepting the awards, Gadd, aged 35, described it as the “stuff of dreams” as he received accolades for outstanding limited or anthology series, best writing, and lead actor for Baby Reindeer, a show inspired by his real-life events.
The narrative follows his character, Donny Dunn, who is pursued by a woman named Martha. After its viral success earlier this year, the show attracted international attention when a woman claiming to be Martha’s real-life counterpart filed a lawsuit against Netflix, asserting that the story is inaccurate.
During his speech for the writing accolade, Gadd stated: “A decade ago, I found myself at a low point. I never imagined I’d manage to turn my life around… and here I am, just over ten years later, receiving one of the highest honors in television writing.”
“I don’t intend for this to come off as arrogance. I say it to inspire anyone facing hardships today to persist… if you’re struggling, keep pushing forward – keep going, and I assure you that things will improve.”
Upon receiving her supporting actress award, Gunning expressed her pride in being a part of the series. “Thank you for trusting me to portray your Martha,” she told Gadd. “I will always remember her, you, and this moment.”
‘I’m a mess today’
This year’s Emmy Awards, staged at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, was an outstanding achievement for Shogun. The series premiered in February and is adapted from James Clavell’s acclaimed novel, set in the 17th century.
Actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai made history as the first Japanese performers to secure Emmy wins in the dramatic acting categories.

Sanada, who received an enthusiastic standing ovation, shared with the audience that he felt “incredibly honored.” He remarked: “Shogun demonstrated to me that through collaboration, we can achieve wonders and craft a brighter future together.”
A tearful Sawai, celebrating her first nomination, conveyed: “I was in tears even before my name was revealed. I’m an emotional wreck today. This is dedicated to all the women who anticipate nothing yet continue to serve as an inspiration for everyone.”
‘This show has transformed my life’
Not only did Baby Reindeer and Shogun shine, but hit series The Bear also garnered multiple accolades.
During their opening monologue, the father-son hosting team Eugene and Dan Levy humorously suggested that the series, showcasing the pressures of working in a professional kitchen, featuring Jeremy Allen White as a chef managing the family establishment following the loss of his brother, might be more fittingly classified as a drama.
Allen White referred to himself as “incredibly fortunate” after receiving the Emmy for lead actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto.
“This show has transformed my life; it has instilled a belief that change is attainable if you reach out because you truly are not alone,” he articulated in his acceptance remarks.
His co-stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colon-Zayas also celebrated wins for best supporting actor and actress in the comedy category.
Despite the accomplishments of The Bear, the event culminated in a surprising victory for Hacks, which triumphed over the defending champion to secure the award for best comedy series.
This marked the second Emmys ceremony of the year, following the September 2023 event, which was delayed to January 2024 due to the strikes by writers and actors in the United States.
The Bear was also among the prominent winners during that event, alongside Succession and Beef.
