At least eight migrants have perished off the coast of France while endeavoring to traverse the English Channel, as reported by French media.
The fatalities occurred near Ambleteuse in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France during the night, according to French officials.
This incident follows the rescue of approximately 200 individuals by French authorities off the coast of Calais within a 24-hour timeframe spanning from Friday to Saturday night.
A vessel transporting migrants in precarious condition was located off the coast of Le Portel, a French seaside town, leading to the rescue of 55 migrants.
Additionally, 61 migrants were picked up near La Becque d’Hardelot, 48 individuals were recovered close to a lighthouse, and eventually, 36 more people were rescued, as reported by French authorities.
All those who were saved were returned to shore.
French authorities revealed that they observed 18 attempts to launch boats across the Channel on Saturday.
This incident follows closely behind a tragedy where at least 12 individuals, including 10 women and girls, lost their lives after a boat with several migrants sank in the English Channel.
The French coastguard reported that more than 65 people were saved after the vessel encountered difficulties off Cap Gris-Nez’s coast.
Gerald Darmanin, France’s interior minister, stated that only eight out of the 70 individuals aboard were equipped with lifejackets.
This event marks the deadliest occurrence this year, which has already witnessed 25 fatalities during Channel crossings.
More than 30 individuals have died attempting to cross the Channel thus far this year.
Government statistics indicate that over 21,000 individuals crossed the English Channel in small boats from January to September this year.
