While he is commonly referred to as Harry, the Duke of Sussex’s complete name is Henry Charles Albert David.
In anticipation of Prince Harry’s 40th birthday this weekend, we have examined his full name and titles.
During a virtual address to a group of children at the WellChild awards ceremony, he remarked about his name: ‘My name is Henry, but everyone refers to me as Harry. I have no idea why.’
Technically, Harry does not possess a surname since traditionally, individuals in the Royal Family who hold a Prince/Princess or His/Her Royal Highness title do not officially have one.
Nonetheless, now that he has resigned from royal responsibilities, he will be permitted to utilize the family surname – Mountbatten Windsor.
The royal family’s website clarifies: ‘The Queen’s descendants, aside from those who have the style of Royal Highness and the title of Prince/Princess, or female descendants who marry, would carry the name Mountbatten-Windsor.’
The statement further indicates that Royal Family members are allowed to use the Mountbatten-Windsor surname when necessary, such as on official documents.
What are Prince Harry’s titles?
Harry was born as His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales, given that his parents (the late Princess Diana and Charles III) held the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales at that time.
However, following Harry’s marriage to Meghan in 2018, they were bestowed the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
In addition, Harry also carries the titles of Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.
When Harry and Meghan chose to step back from senior royal duties in 2020, the couple agreed that they would no longer utilize the style His/Her Royal Highness preceding their names.
Harry was also relieved of his honorary military titles but retains the rest of his titles.
What are Harry’s children’s names and titles?
Harry and Meghan are parents to two children: a son, Archie, aged 3, and a one-year-old daughter, Lilibet Diana.
The couple’s daughter is named after the nickname reportedly used for the late Queen Elizabeth II by her close ones, as well as paying tribute to Harry’s late mother.
Archie and Lilibet are technically referred to as Prince and Princess after the passing of the Queen, as the grandchildren of the Monarch have the right to these titles.
To add to the complexity, the actual name of Meghan Markle is Rachel.
