An urgent appeal has been launched to help restore a Doncaster Scout hut after vandals broke in, trashed the building, and even urinated on children’s art supplies.
The break-in occurred at the Scout hut in Askern, where intruders caused extensive damage. They tore down ceiling insulation, ripped out wiring, destroyed a newly installed kitchen, and emptied cupboards before fleeing. The vandals also urinated throughout the space, further desecrating the cherished community facility.
In addition to the damage, several items were stolen, leaving the hut devastated.
A fundraising campaign has now been launched, aiming to raise £2,000 to help repair the damage and replace stolen items. Organiser Emma Charlton expressed her dismay: “We’re reaching out to our community with heavy hearts following a devastating break-in at our beloved Scouts Hut in Askern. Our hut, a vital space for children and families, has been completely gutted.”
Charlton further described the emotional impact of the break-in: “This hut isn’t just a building – it’s one of the few safe spaces left for children in our area. It’s a place where friendships are formed, life skills are learned, and memories are made.”
She emphasized the importance of the community’s support in rebuilding the hut, a cornerstone for local children. “We won’t let this stop us,” she vowed. “We are determined to rebuild but can’t do it alone. Every donation, no matter how small, will help us bring back the joy and community spirit that this space represents.”
In addition to financial contributions, the Scout troop is also seeking donations of supplies, such as pens, paper, and stationery, to help replace what was damaged.
South Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident. The break-in is believed to have occurred over the weekend, and anyone with information is urged to contact the police at 101. Alternatively, those who wish to remain anonymous can contact CrimeStoppers at 0800 555 111.
With the community’s help, the Scout troop hopes to overcome this setback and restore the hut for future generations.
