Sir Elton John appeared to be in high spirits during his first public outing since disclosing that a severe eye infection had resulted in diminished vision.
The 77-year-old artist flashed a smile and gestured a thumbs-up as he arrived on a buggy at the Toronto International Film Festival with his spouse, David Furnish.
The Rocket Man icon attended the red carpet ceremony for the world premiere of a documentary chronicling his life.
Directed by RJ Cutler and Furnish, Elton John: Never Too Late reflects on the artist’s extensive career and showcases him as he prepares for his farewell concert at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
Sir Elton’s appearance followed closely after he shared his sight struggles on Instagram with his nearly five million followers.
He penned: “Throughout the summer, I’ve been coping with a serious eye infection that has sadly resulted in only partial vision in one eye.
“I am in recovery, but it is an incredibly slow journey, and it will take a while before my sight returns to the affected eye.
“I am immensely grateful for the outstanding team of medical professionals and my family, who have provided such excellent care over the past few weeks.
“I have been quietly spending the summertime recuperating at home, feeling optimistic about the healing progress I have made so far.”
At the Toronto festival, Sir Elton humorously mentioned his eye, stating to the audience: “I’m having the best time of my life – except for this f****** eye. I wish I could see you,” reported Variety.
He also became emotional while highlighting the significance of family over fame post-screening of the documentary.
Sir Elton and Furnish are proud parents of two sons, Zachary and Elijah.
The singer expressed: “What I appreciate about this film is that I have him [Furnish] and my two sons.”
Taking a moment to gather himself, he continued: “I am extraordinarily proud of my accomplishments.
“And I hope to continue creating music, but I wish to be at home with them, seeing and cherishing them.
“It’s the most profound feeling I have ever experienced in my life, surpassing the elation of having my first number one album on Billboard; that was wonderful for about five minutes, but this is a lifetime.”
