Barnsley Man Sentenced to Over Two Years for Violent Disorder
A Barnsley man has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison after participating in violent riots outside the Holiday Inn in Manvers, Rotherham. The 24-year-old, Brad Westerman, was part of a mob that launched missiles at police officers who were protecting the hotel, its staff, and residents.
During his arrest, Westerman reportedly told officers he was “proud” of his actions, which included throwing a bin at the police. Despite being shown CCTV footage of his involvement in the disorder, Westerman maintained he had done “nothing wrong.”
Following an appeal by South Yorkshire Police, a member of the public identified Westerman, leading to his arrest. He pleaded guilty to violent disorder at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on August 19 and was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on August 30. In addition to his prison sentence, Westerman, of Washington Road, Goldthorpe, Barnsley, was issued a 10-year Criminal Behaviour Order.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson commented, “Violent disorder can carry a prison sentence of up to five years. We continue to urge our communities to help ensure those responsible are held accountable.”
The incident has sparked renewed calls for community cooperation to tackle violent disorder in the region.
