Some of Britain’s top cycling athletes are taking to the streets of South Yorkshire today as the Men’s Cycling Tour of Britain rolls through the county for the first time since 2006. The third stage of the renowned annual event will see riders cover an impressive 103.2 miles, beginning in Sheffield and finishing in Barnsley.
The race starts at 11 a.m. from Arundel Gate in Sheffield city centre. From there, cyclists will head west past Fulwood towards the Peak District before turning north through Stannington, Oughtibridge, Grenoside, and Chapeltown. The riders will then pass through Rotherham and Doncaster, reaching Barnsley, where they are expected to cross the finish line on County Way between 2:48 p.m. and 3:35 p.m.
A series of road closures are in place across South Yorkshire to accommodate the event. Sheffield’s roads will be particularly affected, with closures expected until around 3 p.m., alongside rolling roadblocks along the race route in Maltby, Tickhill, Mexborough, and Barnsley.
Arundel Gate, the starting point in Sheffield, was closed as early as 4 a.m. this morning to allow for race preparations and will remain shut until approximately 3 p.m. as the barriers are dismantled post-race.
Throughout the day, road closures lasting 15 to 30 minutes will take effect as the race passes, with police escort vehicles managing traffic flow. Motorists have been warned not to park along the race route between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and yellow advanced warning signs have been posted before the event.
The race will traverse Fulwood Lane, Brown Hills Road, Redmires Road, Lodge Lane, and the A57 Manchester Road in Sheffield. Other streets affected include A6101 Rivelin Valley Road, Haggstones Road, Kirk Edge Road, Jawbone Hill, Skew Hill Lane, Wheel Lane, and A6135 Chapletown Road.
Delays are expected across the region, but spectators are encouraged to line the route and cheer on Britain’s top cyclists as they race through South Yorkshire on this exciting day of competition.
The Men’s Cycle Tour of Britain will journey through South Yorkshire on Thursday, September 5.
