Barnsley, South Yorkshire – A 21-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Alan Sutton, a well-liked resident, following a fatal street altercation in Monk Bretton.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 1, at approximately 4:23 pm, when South Yorkshire Police were called to reports of a street fight involving several men on Burton Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered 41-year-old Alan Sutton, affectionately known as “Algi” by friends and family, suffering from severe stab wounds to his chest. Despite efforts from emergency services, Sutton was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested Callum Strachan, 21, of Burton Road, Barnsley. Strachan has been charged with murder and remains in police custody. He is expected to appear before Barnsley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, September 5.
Authorities have reiterated their appeal for witnesses. A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police urged anyone with information to come forward, stating, “We are continuing to investigate Alan’s death and ask that anyone who may have witnessed the events or has relevant information to please get in touch.”
The tragic death shocked the local community, where Sutton was well-known and respected.
