Doncaster, September 4 — A 41-year-old man described as “vile and dangerous” is set to spend considerable time behind bars after being found guilty of multiple sexual offences against two teenage girls.
Hanzel Scott, of Sovereign Court, Doncaster, was convicted of seven serious charges, including five counts of rape, one count of sexual assault, and one count of attempted sexual assault. The verdict was delivered following a 15-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court, which concluded on August 23.
Scott, who denied all charges, was found guilty of attacking two 16-year-old girls in separate incidents in August and October 2022. The trial, which saw Scott maintain his innocence, ended with a unanimous verdict against him on all counts. He has been remanded in custody and is expected to be sentenced later this year, with the date yet to be confirmed.
Detective Inspector Stephanie Phoenix, who led the investigation for South Yorkshire Police, expressed relief at the conviction, stating, “Hanzel Scott is a vile, dangerous man, and I am pleased we have secured convictions against him on behalf of his two victims, who have shown incredible bravery throughout this awful ordeal. Scott is now facing a long time behind bars, and Doncaster is a safer place for it.”
Phoenix commended the two victims for their courage in coming forward and enduring the challenges of a jury trial. “As Scott pleaded not guilty, they had to endure a jury trial, and they have conducted themselves with tremendous dignity throughout this and the whole investigation. I do hope this conviction is a starting point for them to be able to move forward into a new and brighter chapter in their lives,” she added.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson reiterated the force’s commitment to supporting victims of sexual offences. “If you have been a victim of a sexual offence, we are here for you. If you report it to us, we will listen, we will ensure you get the appropriate support, and we will take action,” the spokesperson said. They also reminded the public that crimes can be reported anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or via their website.
Scott’s sentencing is expected to reflect the gravity of his crimes, and his incarceration will serve as a stern warning to those who perpetrate such heinous acts.
