Authorities are on the lookout for a frugal couple who purportedly absconded after consuming four adult meals and two beverages at a ‘budget-friendly’ eatery where each meal is priced under £10.
The duo is said to have ‘dined and dashed’ from Al Taco in Whitby, North Yorkshire, an establishment that offers burritos for £9.95 and fajitas at £13.75.
This restaurant has garnered a 4.5-star rating on TripAdvisor and has been characterized by satisfied customers as ‘budget-friendly and cheerful’.
North Yorkshire Police have shared an image of the individuals they would like to consult in connection with the incident.
‘We are seeking information regarding a man and woman who departed from a Whitby restaurant without settling their bill,’ stated a spokesperson.
Al Taco expressed gratitude for the community’s support following a social media post that the restaurant shared on Facebook and which was reposted an impressive ten thousand times.
‘Wow!! The initial post, which regrettably featured two patrons and their children exiting Al Taco after refusing to pay for their completed meals, has been shared a staggering ten thousand times!’
‘And while we are profoundly saddened by the situation, we have been overwhelmed by your kind messages and support,’ they added.
‘We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for their affection and encouragement; we feel incredibly proud to live in a small town that stands united.’
Earlier in the year, a group of men was returned to a restaurant in Dumfriesshire after notifying the owner that the food did not meet their expectations enough for them to settle the £300 bill.
The proprietor of the venue stated that it has become increasingly common for diners to evade payment. ‘People believe they can get away with cheating me, which encourages others to try’, he remarked.
‘The six members of their party simply presumed that every item they consumed that night was complimentary.’
Leon Thompson, executive director of UK Hospitality Scotland, commented: ‘Any customers who leave restaurants without paying is utterly intolerable.
‘We urge any operators facing walkouts to report the incidents to law enforcement.’
