A significant fire broke out across the river from London’s O2 Arena after a controlled detonation on a film set spiraled ‘out of control’.
Individuals living nearby took to social media to share photos and video footage of the inferno after experiencing ‘loud booms and explosions’.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that a van was consumed by flames at an outdoor location in Silvertown, east London, with a car and lorry also sustaining damage.
They reported that the fire was contained within about an hour, and fortunately, no injuries were noted.
LFB tweeted on Saturday evening: ‘The fire in #Silvertown resulted from a controlled explosion at a film set which soon escalated. Firefighters swiftly acted to quell the fire, which is now under control.
‘Crews will stay on site for the rest of the evening.’
The Metropolitan Police indicated that the explosions were ‘a part of a pre-arranged filming activity’ in the vicinity and confirmed that ‘there is no danger to the public’.
Last week, the Royal Borough of Greenwich cautioned residents not to be unsettled by ‘a loud explosion’ scheduled for the following night, August 24, as part of filming in the area, although it remained unclear if this incident was associated with that event.
One observer, Christopher Golds, wrote: ‘An enormous explosion occurred in East London opposite the Thames from the O2. Emergency services are already on site.’
Another individual, Sasha Stolp, remarked: ‘There have just been a series of explosions across from the O2.’
Valley Fontaine added: ‘What were those two loud booms and the dark smoke near the O2?’
