Former Premier League player Sol Bamba has passed away at the age of 39 after experiencing health issues prior to a match in Turkey.
Bamba, who formerly played for Cardiff City and served as captain of Leeds United, held the position of technical director at Turkish club Adanspor.
A statement from the club noted: “Our technical director Souleymane Bamba, who fell ill before yesterday’s match against Manisa Football Club, was taken to Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital, where he tragically passed away.”
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and our community.”
Bamba received a diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2021 during his time at Cardiff; however, he was declared cancer-free following treatment and returned to play for both the Bluebirds and Middlesbrough.
His career also included stints with clubs such as Leicester, Hibernian, and Dunfermline, in addition to earning 46 caps for the Ivory Coast national team.
Cardiff City, where Bamba achieved promotion to the Premier League in his debut season, referred to him as a “club legend.”
“Sol’s influence on our football club, both as a player and a coach, was immeasurable,” the club stated in a press release.
“He was a hero to all, a leader in every dressing room, and a genuine gentleman. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving Sol.”
Leeds United expressed that they are “devastated” by the unfortunate news.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends during this heartbreaking time,” the statement conveyed.
“Rest in peace, Sol; you will always remain in our hearts.”
