Three people tragically lost their lives yesterday afternoon in a devastating car accident in the coastal town of Beaumaris, Anglesey. The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. when the city was bustling with visitors enjoying the school holiday.
Emergency services, including police and paramedics, rushed to the scene following reports that a driver had become unwell and lost control of their vehicle, resulting in a collision with pedestrians. The Audi A5 car reportedly swerved to avoid a horse-drawn carriage before mounting the pavement and crashing into a house near Beaumaris pier.
Witnesses described the harrowing scene that unfolded. One local resident recounted, “The Audi seemed to come out of nowhere. It swerved to go around a horse and carriage, mounted the pavement, and hit pedestrians who were walking past a house—they didn’t stand a chance. There are people standing around in shock; they can’t believe what has happened.”
Another eyewitness, visibly shaken by the event, described the frantic efforts of bystanders to save the victims. “People were trying very, very hard to do CPR. It was just awful; the ambulance took ages to get here, and when the police and the vehicles eventually came… there was nothing they could do once they got here. (The vehicle) was so mangled. It’s so mangled it’s not true. Everybody really rallied around, diverting the traffic and trying their best to give the people dignity, but it was pretty horrific.”
The usually tranquil town was filled with tourists at the time of the accident, adding to the shock of the tragedy. “The town is absolutely full of tourists, and people walk down that street. It’s just a beautiful, beautiful place,” the witness added.
Another local who witnessed the crash, Keith Shed, shared his sorrow on social media, saying, “It happened right in front of us on the road beside the pier. It’s an utter tragedy for those directly affected by the crash. There was no warning; it happened completely out of the blue.”
The devastating impact of the accident has reverberated throughout the community. A local businessman expressed his disbelief, stating, “It’s so sad. It’s a shock to the system.” Meanwhile, social media was filled with condolences from residents and public figures alike. One resident wrote, “This is awful! May they rest in peace.”
Local MP Llinos Medi expressed her condolences online: “Devastating news from Beaumaris. I am thinking of everyone who has been affected today. The news has shaken our community here on the island. A heartfelt thank you to all the emergency services and volunteers who are responding to the emergency.”
Former Conservative MP for Ynys Mon, Virginia Crosbie, also shared her thoughts, stating, “My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and loved ones.”
Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth echoed these sentiments, posting on X, “This is devastating news, and my condolences are with those involved and their loved ones. I ask anyone who has any information to assist the police in their investigation to come forward. I am grateful to all the emergency services for their quick response. Diolch.”
The religious community also extended its support, with the Archbishop of Wales, Andrew John, and the Bishop of Bardsey, David Morris, issuing a joint statement offering “our sympathy and prayers to all who have been involved in today’s car accident. This is devastating news for the community and for the friends and family of the three people who have sadly died.”
North Wales Police have confirmed the fatalities and have launched an investigation into the incident. Chief Inspector Caroline Mullen-Hurst urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward, saying, “Sadly, we can confirm that three people have been fatally injured in the incident. We are appealing to anybody who witnessed the incident and hasn’t already spoken to officers or anybody who might have dashcam footage to please get in touch.”
The Beaumaris community is left mourning the loss of life and grappling with the shock of this unexpected tragedy.
Authorities have indicated that the location will probably stay cordoned off for an extended period while inquiries into the incident’s origin proceed.
