DARROWBY — As *All Creatures Great and Small* returns for its fourth season, fans have witnessed significant shifts in the beloved Channel 5 series. The departure of Tristan Farnon, played by Callum Woodhouse, who has gone to war, left a noticeable gap at Skeldale House. To fill the void, the show introduced a new character, veterinary student Richard Carmody, portrayed by James Anthony-Rose.
Nicholas Ralph, who stars as James Herriot, has praised his new co-star for his seamless integration into the tight-knit cast. Speaking on the Master Piece podcast with host Jace Lacob, Ralph shared his thoughts on the newcomer’s performance. “The roles shifted a little bit. Then Jamie came in and did a wonderful job as Richard Carmody,” Ralph said. He continued, “I mean, coming in on a fourth season with a cast so tight as we were, after a couple of days, it felt like he’d been there the whole time.”
Ralph’s admiration for Anthony-Rose’s work didn’t stop there. He expressed his respect for the actor’s ability to adapt to the show’s established dynamics quickly. “I take my hat off to him. Incredible job,” Ralph remarked, emphasizing the impressive nature of his co-star’s performance.
While the introduction of Richard Carmody has brought new energy to Skeldale House, Ralph acknowledged that Tristan Farnon’s absence has been felt by both the characters and the audience, altering the dynamic that fans have grown to love.
Season four also brought another significant change, as Helen Herriot, played by Rachel Shenton, and her husband James welcomed their first child. The series concluded on an emotional high, with the couple embracing their new roles as parents.
As the show progresses, a teaser for the upcoming season, set to air later this year, suggests more heartwarming moments are on the horizon. The preview hints at a christening celebration for the Herriots’ newborn, with a surprise appearance by Tristan, who returns in complete military attire, standing by his friend James.
While it remains unclear whether Tristan’s return will be permanent, series fans are thrilled to see him back in Darrowby and eagerly anticipate the next season.
