Doncaster Man Jailed for Violent Outburst Against Police in Rotherham
Rotherham, 21 August – Lewis Merritt, 27, has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison following his involvement in a violent incident targeting police officers in Manvers, Rotherham. The turmoil unfolded outside the Holiday Inn hotel on Sunday, 4 August.
Merritt, a resident of Victoria Road, Balby, was caught on camera amidst the chaos, where he was seen loitering before actively participating in the violence. During the incident, Merritt threw chairs and planks of wood at officers, kicked a police van, and removed crowd control barriers.
Despite his attempts to conceal his identity with a face covering, Merritt was identified in the video. On 15 August, when officers arrived at an address in Mexborough to arrest him, Merritt attempted to evade capture by hiding in a loft. His efforts were thwarted as his legs were visible, leading to his swift detention.
Initially, Merritt refused to comment during his police interview. However, confronted with substantial evidence, he later admitted to throwing wooden objects. At Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on 16 August, Merritt pleaded guilty to charges of violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker.
The sentencing occurred at Sheffield Crown Court on 21 August, where Merritt received a prison term of two years and eight months for his actions.
