A prominent figure in Hollywood, Alicia Silverstone has confirmed her well-being to concerned supporters after posting a video of herself ingesting a toxic fruit during her time in England.
The esteemed American actress, renowned for portraying the iconic character Cher in the 1995 film Clueless, uploaded the footage on her Instagram profile on Monday.
Within the video, Silverstone is seen taking a bite of a petite orange fruit resembling a cherry tomato, prompting her audience to identify it.
Speculations arose among social media users that the fruit in question was the solanum pseudocapsicum, more commonly referred to as the Jerusalem cherry, which is mildly toxic according to the Royal Horticultural Society.
In the video, the 47-year-old actress stands outdoors, observing the plant from across a fence and ponders aloud, “Let’s unravel this mystery together, as I impulsively tasted this strange fruit that resembled a cherry tomato during a street discussion.”
She continues to remark, “Contrary to expectations, it’s not a tomato; just look at the distinctive leaves surrounding it.”
Silverstone proceeds to showcase the leaves before inquiring, “Any idea what kind of fruit this may be?”
After sampling the plant once again and revealing its seeds, larger than typical tomato seeds, she muses, “This appears more akin to a pepper; any insights on this mystery? Currently in England,” she queries.
Responding to her post, concerned social media users caution against consuming the fruit.

One observer cautioned, “Do not ingest; it is poisonous.” Another individual stressed, “Avoid consuming wild berries, mushrooms, or any ‘questionable’ items. Your well-being matters!” A third commentator identified it as a Jerusalem cherry and advised against consuming it.
In a subsequent social media update on Tuesday, Silverstone shared, “I am healthy and safe! No need to worry… I didn’t swallow it.”
According to the Horticultural Trades Association’s 2022 publication on potentially dangerous plants, the Jerusalem cherry is deemed harmful if ingested by humans or animals.
Following her portrayal in Clueless, Silverstone featured in Batman And Robin (1997) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004).
