The family of Maria Branyas, an American-born Spaniard widely believed to be the oldest person in the world at the age of 117, announced her passing on Tuesday.
In a message posted on Ms. Branyas’s social media account on X, her family conveyed, “Maria Branyas has departed from us. She left this world as she wished: peacefully, in her sleep, and free from suffering.”
After French nun Lucile Randon’s passing last year, the Gerontology Research Group, which verifies details of individuals aged 110 or above, recognized Ms. Branyas as the oldest living person globally.
Ms. Branyas was born in San Francisco on March 4, 1907, and her family later relocated to Spain during her childhood.
