Rotherham, August 19 — In a significant development nearly nine years after the brutal assault of an elderly war veteran, South Yorkshire Police have arrested a 36-year-old woman from Rotherham on suspicion of murder.
Tommy Ward, an 80-year-old resident of Maltby, Rotherham, was viciously attacked in his home on October 1, 2015. The pensioner sustained life-threatening injuries during a violent break-in, where a safety deposit box containing approximately £30,000 in cash was stolen. A harrowing photograph of Mr Ward, bedridden with severe injuries to his face, neck, and chest, shocked the public when it was released shortly after the incident.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Mr Ward tragically succumbed to his injuries four months later in February 2016, prompting a murder investigation. Over the years, the investigation has seen the arrest of ten men and one woman on suspicion of various offences connected to the crime. However, all were released without charges, leaving the case unresolved.
In October 2019, on the fourth anniversary of Mr. Ward’s death, his daughter, Jackie Perry, made an emotional plea to the public, urging anyone with information to come forward. “We are still no wiser as to who did this,” she said. “Someone must know. Please just come forward so we can have justice.”
South Yorkshire Police renewed their appeal for information last year, leading to Monday’s arrest. The investigation remains ongoing, and the police continue to appeal for any information that could bring those responsible to justice.
Jackie Perry’s words resonate with the community: “Please help us and share these photos. I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through this—it’s heartbreaking. Perhaps it might pull at someone’s heartstrings to come forward.”
As the investigation progresses, the hope is that this latest arrest will finally bring closure to the grieving family and justice for Tommy Ward.
