Doncaster, UK – A woman who caused a major power outage and fire after crashing her car into an electricity box while driving under the influence has been sentenced by the court.
Hayley Booth, 32, of Oxford Avenue, Lincoln, was nearly three times over the legal drink-drive limit when she was arrested on the evening of July 19 on Gainsborough Road in Bawtry. A breathalyzer test revealed she had 99 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, significantly above the legal limit of 35.
The collision triggered a fire and led to widespread power cuts, plunging half of Bawtry town centre into darkness. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
Sergeant Chris Rogers of the Doncaster South Neighbourhood Policing Team condemned Booth’s actions, describing her driving as “dangerous and foolish.” He emphasized the potential consequences of her reckless decision to drive while intoxicated, expressing relief that no one was harmed.
“Booth’s actions had serious repercussions, causing a significant power outage and endangering lives,” said Sgt. Rogers. “Alcohol is a leading factor in fatal and serious collisions in South Yorkshire, and I hope this sentencing serves as a stark reminder that we will not tolerate dangerous drivers on our roads.”
Booth appeared at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court on August 12, where she pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle while over the legal alcohol limit. The court handed down a 12-month community order, requiring Booth to complete 160 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, she was disqualified from driving for two years and two months and must pass an extended driving test before her license can be reinstated.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to crack down on impaired driving and protect the community’s safety.
