Thousands of Households Eligible for £500 from Government’s Household Support Fund – Act Now Before September Deadline
Thousands of households across the UK could receive vital financial assistance of up to £500 from the government’s Household Support Fund (HSF) to help with the rising cost of living. The Fund, administered by local councils, supports basic needs such as food, clothing, and utilities.
The Household Support Fund, which offers help through vouchers and small grants, is scheduled to be available until September. However, due to high demand, funds in some areas may be depleted sooner. This makes it crucial for eligible residents to act promptly to ensure they receive the support they need.
How to Apply and Who is Eligible
Eligibility for the HSF varies depending on location and individual circumstances. It often focuses on those experiencing financial hardship or receiving certain benefits, like Council Tax Support or Universal Credit. Some councils automatically issue payments to eligible residents, while others require an application process.
Residents are advised to visit their local council’s website for detailed information on eligibility criteria, application procedures, and deadlines. If they find it difficult to access information online, they should contact the council’s customer service or welfare support teams directly.
Additional Support for Families
In addition to direct cash payments, the HSF supports families with children receiving benefit-related Free School Meals. These families will automatically receive vouchers to help cover food costs during school holidays. The Fund’s assistance extends beyond financial aid, offering support through partner organizations to help cover costs for essentials like food and energy bills.
Uncertain Future for the Fund
While the Household Support Fund will continue until September 2024, its future remains to be determined. Discussions are ongoing, with MPs urging the government to extend the scheme. During a recent House of Lords session, Baroness Maeve Sherlock, a Labour under-secretary of state at the Department for Work and Pensions, highlighted the importance of longer-term, multiyear funding for councils.
Though the Conservative government initially introduced the scheme, Labour has shown a solid commitment to tackling the cost-of-living crisis, making an extension of the HSF or a similar support program a likely consideration. The final decision will depend on the Labour government’s budget priorities and public support for the Fund.
Act Now
With the deadline approaching on Friday, 30 September, and the potential for funds to run out sooner in some areas, eligible households should immediately apply for the HSF. Visit your local council’s website or contact them directly to learn more about how you can receive this essential support.
