Jessica Holmes, the widow of beloved TV presenter Jonnie Irwin, is facing renewed heartbreak following the recent death of her father. This devastating loss comes just months after the passing of her husband, Jonnie, who lost a courageous four-year battle with cancer earlier this year.
Jessica took to Instagram to express her deep sorrow, sharing with her followers, “My heart breaks again. Dad, you were the best. And the wittiest ever. I get the mad side from you, that’s for sure. Love you.” Her message revealed the profound grief she feels as she navigates this challenging time, having already endured the loss of her husband.
Jonnie Irwin, who became a familiar face as the host of *A Place in the Sun* from 2004 until 2021, succumbed to terminal lung cancer in February 2024 at the age of 50. His diagnosis, which was made public in 2022, came after the cancer had spread to his brain, marking a turning point in his health battle.
In the face of his illness, Jonnie made careful preparations, ensuring that his affairs were in order. His estate, valued at £953,000, was bequeathed entirely to Jessica, the mother of their three young sons—Rex, aged five, and twins Cormac and Rafa, both two. Legal documents revealed that Jonnie’s total assets amounted to £956,967, with minor reductions following deductions. His will, drafted in October 2022, was finalized in August through proceedings at Newcastle probate court.
In a heartfelt interview with *Hello!* magazine, Jessica reflected on the deep bond she shared with Jonnie, describing their relationship as more than just a friendship: “We weren’t best friends, we were lovers—there was passion.” She recalled the heartbreaking final days of Jonnie’s life, spent at home under her tender care, with support from nurses. Jessica shared the stark contrast between his playful demeanour just days before and his rapid decline upon returning from the hospital, remarking on the cruelty of how swiftly his condition worsened.
Jessica also recounted a poignant memory involving their eldest son, Rex, who visited Jonnie shortly before he passed away. She believes that Rex sensed something was wrong in his way as he tenderly kissed his father’s hand, perhaps understanding more than he could express.
In a touching tribute, Jessica revealed that she had given some of Jonnie’s ashes to his closest friends—whom he lovingly referred to as his “brothers”—to scatter during a walking holiday in the Lake District, a place that held special meaning for Jonnie. She recounted, “On their last trip, they rented e-bikes to make it easier for Jonnie and went to the Lake District. Two weeks ago, the others went back, and I said to them, ‘Do you want to take a bit of him with you?’ so they sprinkled some of his ashes on the top of a mountain.”
The family also plans to plant a special tree in Northumberland, where Jonnie’s ashes will be placed in the roots. This will fulfill his final wish and create a lasting tribute to his memory.
As Jessica Holmes faces this new wave of grief, she remains surrounded by the love and support of her family and friends, finding strength in their shared memories and the legacy Jonnie left behind.
After the recent passing of her husband, Jonnie Irwin, Jessica Holmes finds herself devastated yet again as she mourns the loss of her father only a few months apart.
