The video footage depicts the tumultuous instant when a group of adolescents attempted to harm a man during daylight hours at an eastern London Overground station.
The surveillance video displays hooded teenagers engaging in a violent confrontation involving knives and firearms just a few meters away from other commuters at Hackney Central Railway Station last year while they aimed to attack a 20-year-old individual.
In the altercation that took place on March 1, 2023, a 64-year-old female bystander got caught in the melee, with the targeted individual using her as a shield inside an elevator where she sought refuge as an assailant fired shots into it.
Moments before this incident, she narrowly avoided being slashed by a knife wielded by one of the attackers inside the compact elevator, who was targeting the man being stabbed.
The targeted man defended himself by using his blade and succeeded in pushing one of the assailants, Hanzell Greenaway, out of the elevator but sustained another stab wound.
Upon re-entering the elevator, two more teenagers, Elisandro Pinto Alves, with a slashing knife and Jaheim Thomas, armed with a handgun, confronted him.
Following the altercation, the attackers swiftly escaped on bicycles, but their actions were captured on CCTV, and investigators later utilized footage, mobile phone records, and vehicle monitoring to track the movements of Alves, Greenaway, and Thomas across London, Dunstable, and Folkestone.
Upon the arrival of armed officers and emergency services, the victim was discovered with life-threatening injuries that included multiple lacerations and a gunshot wound to the leg.
Although a 64-year-old bystander escaped physical harm, the victim managed to survive the assault.
Now, after the disturbing incident, four teenagers have been given a total of 77 years in prison.
Marvin Edokpolo, aged 19, from Dalston Lane, Hackney, orchestrated the attack upon discovering the victim’s presence at the station. He contacted the others from a nearby McDonald’s.
Edokpolo received a sentence totalling 22 years and three months. Hanzell Greenaway, 18, from Munro Way, Hackney, and Jaheim Thomas, 18, from Cassland Road, Hackney, received a combined sentence of 19 years each. Elisandro Pinto Alves, 18, from Overbury Street, Hackney, was sentenced to 17 years.
Senior Investigating Officer, DI Paul Attwell, stated: ‘This was a startling assault in broad daylight that was fortunately not deadly, not just for the intended target but also the unsuspecting observer in the elevator. Fortunately, incidences of violence involving firearms on the railway network are exceedingly rare. Still, when they do happen, we will exert every effort to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.
‘This was an extremely intricate investigation, and I commend those at BTP who worked tirelessly to construct this case. The verdict is a testament to their dedication and expertise, and I am appreciative to witness these sentences being imposed.’
