Rotherham United in Talks with Sheffield Wednesday Over Mallik Wilks
Rotherham United’s pursuit of forward Mallik Wilks from Sheffield Wednesday has become a key topic of discussion as the Millers gear up for the new season.
According to Rotherham United manager Steve Evans, the club has talked with Sheffield Wednesday regarding the acquisition of Wilks. The 25-year-old forward, who spent last season mainly on the bench at Hillsborough, is reportedly on Rotherham’s radar as they continue to reshape their squad for the 2024/25 campaign.
Evans confirmed, “Yeah, we like Mallik a lot. We can’t afford his left boot at the moment, but we never mind his right boot. It is a breakdown in communications. We can’t get a definitive ‘yes’ or ‘no’. We get a ‘Well, can you do this? Maybe, maybe not’.”
This summer has seen a flurry of activity at the New York Stadium. Rotherham United made 13 new signings as they prepare for life in League One following their relegation from the Championship. Despite the influx of new players, Evans must finish his squad overhaul.
Wilks, a Leeds United’s academy product, left Elland Road after making just one senior appearance for the Whites. Before a brief stint at Barnsley, his career included loan spells at Accrington Stanley, Grimsby Town, and Doncaster Rovers. He later moved to Hull City, where he had a notable impact before Sheffield Wednesday secured his services two years ago. However, his time with the Owls could have been more fruitful, with only three goals to his name.
Interest in Wilks from League One clubs such as Charlton Athletic and Reading was reported in May, underscoring the forward’s continued appeal despite his limited game time last season. As the new season begins with Rotherham’s opening match against Exeter City, the club remains hopeful of finalizing a deal that could see Wilks join their ranks.
