Leeds, Hull, and Sheffield: Far-Right Protests Lead to Arrests and Clashes
Violence erupted in several Yorkshire cities this weekend as far-right demonstrations sparked clashes with police and counter-protesters. The unrest followed a series of riots across England earlier in the week, ignited by the tragic deaths of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club in Merseyside.
In Hull, the situation grew particularly intense. Riot police were deployed and resorted to using pepper spray against demonstrators who were throwing rocks and other objects. Many protesters were waving St George’s Cross flags and targeting asylum seekers, whom they falsely claimed were residing in a local hotel. At least four individuals were arrested, and three officers sustained injuries. Chief Superintendent Darren Wildbore commented, “Our officers have faced eggs and bottles being thrown and have made four arrests relating to public order offences. We have also issued a dispersal order for the area, and there will remain a visible police presence as they remain in the area to protect the safety of those in the community. I can confirm that we have not deployed tear gas contrary to speculation in the media.”
The unrest continued in Leeds, where pro-Palestine marchers confronted far-right protesters wearing Tommy Robinson t-shirts and holding Reform UK placards. The two groups were kept apart by police for much of the day. Far-right protesters, estimated at around 150, chanted slogans such as “You’re not English any more” and “paedo Muslims off our street” outside the city’s central library and art gallery. They were heavily outnumbered by counter-protesters, who waved Palestinian flags and shouted, “Nazi scum off our streets” and “There are many, many more of us than you.” The latter group also taunted Tommy Robinson, who has since left the UK.
Liverpool experienced some of the worst violence, with masked youths throwing bricks at police officers. The week’s disturbances also included riots in London, Manchester, Southport, and Hartlepool. Nearly 150 people have been arrested in connection with these incidents.
Authorities are preparing for further unrest, with additional prosecutors on standby to handle violent disorder. Hope Not Hate, a campaign group, has identified over 30 planned protests for the weekend. In Sunderland, a protest on Friday night saw violent clashes, including the burning of an overturned car and attacks on a mosque. One individual, filmed participating in the violence, was identified as having a Nazi swastika tattooed on his back.
South Yorkshire Police have acknowledged the heightened tensions and are preparing for planned protests in Rotherham. A spokesperson for the force stated, “We are aware of heightened tensions nationally following the tragic incident in Southport earlier this week. We are engaging with our communities across all force areas and continue monitoring any local concerns.”
Humberside Police’s Chief Superintendent Darren Wildbore added, “We have been made aware by organizers of a planned protest in Hull City Centre on Saturday, August 3. Officers are in regular contact with those involved in organizing the event to ensure that disruption to the rest of the public is minimized whilst also respecting the right to peaceful protest.”
West Yorkshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Osman Khan echoed these sentiments, saying, “We are, of course, aware of recent disorder across the country and continue to monitor relevant intelligence relating to the possibility of further incidents. We are experienced and well-prepared in terms of planning for and managing incidents such as these should they occur.”
Leeds Central and Headingley MP Alex Sobel condemned the far-right protests, stating, “Today, we stand united in condemning the planned far-right protests in Leeds. Our city is a diverse, tolerant, and united place whose values are directly threatened by such divisive actions. These protests do not represent who we are as a community.”
Following far-right protests, eight individuals have been detained after a law enforcement vehicle was ignited in Sunderland. This incident occurred before anticipated gatherings throughout Yorkshire today.
