GROSOMONT, North Yorkshire: A dramatic rescue operation unfolded today after a single-decker bus veered off Barnard’s Road bridge and plummeted approximately 30 feet into a shallow river below. The incident occurred around 1:40 PM BST on Saturday, August 3, near Whitby.
Emergency services, including ambulance, fire and rescue teams, coastguard personnel, and police, responded promptly. Fortunately, all five individuals on the bus escaped with only minor injuries. They were swiftly rescued from the precarious situation, and no serious harm was reported.
Photos from the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue team depict the bus precariously positioned over the river. The rescue operation was complicated by the need for heavy lifting equipment to recover the bus, and structural engineers were called in to assess the damage to the bridge.
By 10:00 PM BST, a crane had successfully removed the bus from the river. However, the damaged bridge remains closed, and a road closure is in effect. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area until further notice.
North Yorkshire Police have confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The bridge remains under inspection to ensure its safety before it is reopened.
The Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue team were initially on their way to another incident in Dalby Forest. They were redirected to assist with the bus crash but were later stood down once all occupants were accounted for and safe.
Authorities continue to urge caution and advise the public to avoid the affected area until the situation is resolved.
Drivers and individuals walking are advised to steer clear of the vicinity until additional information is provided.
