Bridlington, August 5, 2024 — The Bridlington Salvation Army’s breakfast club is reaching out to the community for donations as it strives to continue providing essential services to local residents facing hardship.
Each Monday, the Salvation Army’s One Stop drop-in at their Wellington Road location offers a hot breakfast, beverages, and crucial support services to individuals who are homeless or struggling financially. The program, including food parcels and guidance on housing, benefits, and health, has become increasingly vital as demand surges.
The rising cost of living has led to a significant increase in need. The drop-in now distributes approximately 50 food parcels weekly and regularly serves between 40 and 60 people each session—a marked rise from the eight individuals who attended before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Volunteer Jane Dickinson expressed gratitude for the community’s ongoing support but highlighted the urgent need for additional contributions. “Poverty is a pressing issue here,” Dickinson noted. “Many people come to us with stories of struggling with basic necessities. We provide a range of support, from food parcels to showers and laundry services for those sleeping rough.”
The Bridlington Salvation Army’s services are particularly crucial during the summer months when the number of people migrating to the coast increases. “We see a lot of new faces as well as regulars,” Dickinson added. “People often move here hoping for a better situation but find that the struggles continue.”
Among the regulars is 43-year-old Ashley, who shared his experience of financial strain. “After paying bills and rent, I barely have anything left. I was embarrassed to seek help at first, but now I rely on the breakfast club to get by,” he said. “The support here is incredible. It really makes a difference.”
Phil, 52, another regular, finds solace in the community aspect of the drop-in. “I come for the companionship and the food parcels. As a carer for my wife with MS and someone with mobility issues, I can’t work, so this support is essential,” he explained. “The friendships I’ve made here are invaluable.”
The drop-in runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every Monday, with a dedicated team of volunteers, including Val, Linda, Damo, Jean, Ann, Julie, Colin, and Max, who ensure each visitor receives the support they need. Max described a typical Monday, highlighting the diverse needs of attendees, from recent bereavement to long-term homelessness and poor housing conditions.
Major Barbara Jeffery, who leads the Bridlington Salvation Army, emphasized the importance of the community’s support. “We are committed to offering practical help without discrimination. Our ability to provide these services relies heavily on the generosity of volunteers and donors,” she said. “If you can contribute in any way, please get in touch.”
The Salvation Army also operates a charity shop on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with proceeds supporting their programs. For more information or to offer support, call 01262 603 009 or visit their website [here](#).
