Tragically, two children lost their lives, and nine others sustained injuries, with six of them in critical condition.
Authorities indicated that two adults were also severely injured while attempting to shield the children from the assailant.
The assault occurred on Monday, 29th July, at The Hart Space, a community venue and maternity care facility on Hart Street in Southport, situated roughly 20 miles north of Liverpool.
Witnesses in the neighborhood referred to the incident as reminiscent of a terrifying movie scene, as eight individuals were taken to hospitals with stab wounds.
Hart Street mostly comprises residential properties and is located approximately a mile from Southport station.
The Enlighten yoga and dance program inspired by Taylor Swift, hosted by a children’s yoga studio, was scheduled to run from 10 am to 12 pm.
Promotional material for the event online indicated that the workshop catered to children in Years 2 to 6 of primary school, aged between six and eleven.
The session was supervised by two instructors on Monday morning.
‘A Scene Straight out of Hollywood’
Colin Parry, a local entrepreneur, was among those who alerted law enforcement and depicted the aftermath of the assault as though it was a “sequence from a movie of horror.”
Mr. Parry operates at Masters Vehicle Body Repairs, an auto repair shop next to The Hart Space on Hart Street. He recollects witnessing the perpetrator before the attack.
He observed a taxi discharging a male passenger at his address, which turned out to be the wrong location, then lost sight of the individual as the taxi departed.
Expressing his disbelief, he commented, “It’s as if this happened in America, not our sunny Southport.”
“This was clearly premeditated,” he remarked.
Shortly after, his colleague was spotted carrying a young girl out from the adjacent building to Masters, both covered in blood.
Following this, distressed parents who came to collect their children just before midday were heard screaming in anguish, he recounted.
Witness Accounts of the Knife Attack
Ryan Carney, a resident of Hart Street living with his mother, hurried back from work to support her upon witnessing the chaos.
Describing the scene, Mr. Carney recounted how his mother, Hayley, heard a woman screaming about her missing child.
He further elaborated that his mother witnessed emergency services carrying girls, dressed in white but drenched in blood, and highlighted the visible stab wounds on the children’s backs.
The Swift Emergency Response to the Violent Incident
Merseyside Police were alerted to the incident on Hart Street at 11.47 am via an emergency call.
Within a minute, at 11.48 am, the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call regarding the stabbings.
The situation was swiftly categorized as a “major incident,” leading to the dispatch of 13 ambulances and an air ambulance to the location.
Dave Kitchin, the head of service for the North West Ambulance Service in Cheshire and Merseyside, later remarked on the harrowing sight paramedics encountered on arrival.
Multiple ambulances and air ambulances were deployed to transport the 13 victims to various hospitals: Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Manchester Children’s Hospital, Aintree Hospital, Southport & Formby Hospital, and Ormskirk Hospital.
Alder Hey also declared a “major incident” due to the high influx of patients in the emergency department and advised parents to visit only in cases of urgent need.
