Tragedy Strikes as Two Young Men Die in North Yorkshire Plane Crash
North Yorkshire, Sunday – Heartbroken families have paid tribute to two young men who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash near Thorganby, Selby, on Sunday morning.
Police confirmed that a two-seater light aeroplane crashed in a field around 9:50 am, resulting in the deaths of the two occupants, believed to be the pilot and a passenger. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene of the incident.
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service released a statement: “We received an emergency call at 9:50 am on Sunday reporting an incident involving a light aircraft at Thorganby near York. A number of our resources have responded to the incident.”
A representative from North Yorkshire Police added, “We were called to an incident involving a light aircraft at a rural location in Thorganby, Selby, at around 9:50 am today. A two-seater light aeroplane with two occupants had crashed in a field. Sadly, two men in their 20s, believed to be the pilot and passenger, have been pronounced dead. Their next of kin have been told, and formal identification processes are currently underway. No further injuries have been reported.”
The families of the victims, Matthew Bird, 21, and Oliver Dawes, 24, expressed their grief and paid emotional tributes to the young men.
Matthew Bird’s family from Spofforth said, “Yesterday we lost our son, a brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. Matthew meant so much to so many. We are utterly heartbroken, but he will live on in our hearts as we cherish the incredibly special memories he’s left us with.”
Oliver Dawes’s family from Burley in Wharfedale echoed similar sentiments: “Yesterday, we lost a dearly loved son, cousin, nephew, and friend. Oliver will continue to live on in our hearts and memories as the kind, generous, hardworking, and fun man he had become. We will miss him every day for the rest of our lives; we are heartbroken.”
The police confirmed that investigations into the crash’s circumstances are ongoing and are working with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch to determine the cause.
MP for Selby, Keir Mather, expressed his condolences: “I am incredibly saddened by the news regarding the plane crash in Thorganby Yesterday. My heart goes out to the two men who lost their lives, as well as their loved ones, at this awful time. Thank you to the emergency services, including the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, North Yorkshire Police, and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, which are working to establish the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident.”
