Allegations of racial discrimination have led to the suspension of eight police officers by the Greater Manchester Police. Another officer has been placed on restricted duties as the force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The specific details of the accusations have not been disclosed, but they have been described as ‘deeply concerning’ by the GMP. Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Allen, head of the professional standards directorate, stated that a comprehensive investigation is underway to address these issues and reassure the community.
Most of the suspended officers are from the Bury district, with one from Rochdale who was working there at the time of the allegations. This is not the first instance of suspensions within the district this month, prompting GMP to temporality relocate officers to manage duties.
Earlier in July, five officers were suspended and two were placed on restricted duties. Another referral was made to the IOPC on July 4, which initiated an investigation the following day. The claim in this case is centered around officers engaging in conversations with offensive language.
Catherine Bates, the regional director, emphasized the importance of investigating such behavior to uphold public confidence in policing and ensure integrity among officers. The investigation aims to address any discriminatory behavior appropriately, with ongoing reviews of the officers’ statuses.
In a separate incident at Manchester Airport, a video surfaced showing a police officer kicking a man in the face and stomping on his head, leading to the suspension of an officer and a criminal investigation for possible assault charges.
