Footage Reveals Alleged Assault on Police Officers Prior to Man Being Kicked in Head
A recently surfaced video displays the reported assault on three police officers at Manchester Airport, culminating in a man being kicked in the head. The footage, acquired by the Manchester Evening News, depicts the tumultuous sequence of events that led to an officer delivering a kick and stomp on the head of a man lying face down on the floor.
Following the widespread sharing of the footage on social media, a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer was suspended on Thursday. This led to protests in Rochdale and the city center of Manchester.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) announced on Friday that the officer is now under criminal investigation for assault.
Investigation and Suspension of Officer
The IOPC has advised the officer that he is under criminal investigation for the assault. It is now being deliberated whether to refer the issue to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and whether disciplinary actions should be taken against the involved officer.
Authorities are looking for witnesses regarding three altercations that occurred at Terminal 2 of Manchester Airport on Tuesday. These incidents included two altercations prior to what the police describe as an assault on three officers.
Head Injuries and Arrests
All individuals involved sustained head injuries, with a female constable suffering a broken nose. Four men were taken into custody but have since been released on bail.
Mayor Andy Burnham expressed that the situation is complex with multiple perspectives. He cautioned against hasty conclusions and encouraged people to await the investigation outcomes.
Calls for Restraint
Mayor Burnham urged restraint, emphasizing that the ongoing investigations need to progress smoothly to provide a comprehensive understanding of the events.
