Pushback Against JD Vance
Coming to the forefront recently, Kamala Harris’s step-daughter has reacted strongly to JD Vance’s resurfaced comments where he referred to the Vice President as one of the Democrats’ “childless cat ladies”. Vance, who was chosen as the Republican vice presidential nominee by Donald Trump, criticized Harris and other Democrats in a 2021 interview, labeling them as “a group of childless cat ladies who are miserable in their own lives and regretful of their choices.”
In the interview with Fox News, Vance pointed out, “You look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] – the entire future of the Democrats is in the hands of individuals without children. How does it make any sense to entrust our country to those who don’t have a direct stake in it?”
It’s important to note that Kamala Harris, aged 59, shares parenting responsibilities for two stepchildren, Ella and Cole, with her husband Doug Emhoff.
Family Defender
Following the resurgence of the video clip, Doug Emhoff’s ex-wife Kerstin described Vance’s comments as “unfounded attacks” and emphasized in an interview with CNN that the Vice President is “affectionate, caring, ardently protective, and always present.” Meanwhile, Ella, one of the stepchildren, posted Kerstin’s statements on Instagram, challenging the notion of being ‘childless’ by highlighting her close bond with her family and praising her mother for her advocacy. She expressed, “How can you be ‘childless’ when you have adorable kids like Cole and me? I appreciate my three parents.”
Celebrity Condemnation
Various celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston, criticized JD Vance for his remarks, with the renowned actress expressing disbelief that such comments could come from a potential Vice President of the United States. Aniston, referring to Vance, remarked on Instagram, “All I can say is… Mr. Vance, I hope your daughter gets the chance to have her own children one day. I wish she won’t have to resort to IVF as a last resort. You seem to be undermining that possibility for her as well.”

Evolving Narratives
In a personal revelation made in 2022 to Allure magazine, Jennifer Aniston disclosed her experiences with IVF during her 30s and 40s, expressing no regrets despite unsuccessful attempts to conceive. Notably, Vance, at 39, was among the 46 Republican senators who opposed the Right to IVF Act in June, a legislation seeking to establish federal access to IVF treatment. The Harris campaign also issued a robust response to Vance’s statements, emphasizing that “each and every American holds a stake in the future of this nation.”
Furthermore, Vance’s comments were not solely misdirected towards Harris. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and his husband welcomed adopted infant twins in September 2021, preceding Vance’s controversial remarks by over a month.
