The Disheartening Revelation
Mark Fletcher, at 49 years old, found himself in a peculiar situation when the numbers on the lottery ticket he seemingly bought aligned perfectly with those displayed on the Lotto app. The prize? A staggering £11 million.
However, the cruel twist in the story was that Mark had not even purchased a ticket in the first place. Instead of viewing his ticket, he mistook the National Lottery result checker on the app for his own.
A Surprising Phone Call
Upon contacting Lotto to verify his supposed win, Mark was informed that he was not a winner. The realization dawned on him that he had inadvertently become Britain’s most unfortunate lottery player.
Disheartened and Doubtful
Mark’s joy of potentially becoming a millionaire was short-lived. The disbelief and lack of empathy shown to him during the phone call made the zero win even more distressing. He expressed doubts about the integrity of the Lotto service after this experience.
‘They’ve not shown any empathy towards me. It has impacted me – I’m left thinking about all the “what ifs”. If they’ve told me I’ve won but in actual fact I’ve won nothing, it’s a bit cruel and I’ve had sleepless nights.’
An Official Response
Allwyn, the global lottery operator overseeing the National Lottery, clarified that even though players can save sets of numbers in the app for checking, Mark had not played the winning numbers in any previous draws. Therefore, his claim to the £11 million was invalid.
