An educator who once taught Ollie Watkins during his school days has opened up about why the talented player was destined for success, dubbing him a “Rolls Royce player,” and shedding light on the unique accolade he received while in school.
Mike Slater, head of Physical Education at South Dartmoor Community College in Ashburton, Devon, disclosed that Watkins’ former schoolmates were greatly inspired by his last-gasp goal in the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
“The excitement was palpable. A WhatsApp group consisting of former teachers was rooting for Ollie to come on and secure the victory, and for him to deliver with a goal in the 90th minute was truly unbelievable,” he remarked.
Jokingly, the PE teacher remarked, “We gladly accept any reflected glory, but we’re immensely proud to have nurtured someone who transitioned from our school to the England team.
“It is uncommon for students to reach the England squad, let alone to score the winning goal in the 90th minute of a European championship semi-final; it’s simply extraordinary.”
Mr. Slater commenced teaching Watkins during his tenth year at school.
“Initially, he provided quite a challenge during the first few lessons. He possessed a mischievous charm, but his exceptional athletic abilities were evident,” Slater stated.
“Football was his forte, but he excelled in various other pursuits.
“He was the kind of student with whom you could share a laugh. Polite and respectful, yet possessing a mischievous streak, he was a remarkable individual,” he added.
However, there was one sport that did not captivate him.
“I encouraged him to try rugby once – but he wasn’t keen on it. Nevertheless, in all other aspects, he excelled,” disclosed Mr. Slater.
