The remains of an American mountaineer who vanished 22 years ago on a snowy peak have been discovered.
William Stampfl went missing in June 2002 after being buried by an avalanche on Huascaran Mountain in Peru, according to AFP news agency. Despite extensive search and rescue efforts at the time, the 59-year-old climber’s body could not be located and has remained frozen for over two decades.
His body, remarkably well-preserved by the icy conditions, was recently uncovered as rising temperatures due to global warming caused the ice to melt, police reported.
Mr Stampfl’s clothes, harnesses, and boots, along with his personal belongings, were still intact, enabling authorities to identify him.
