A 17-year-old male student tragically lost his life during a school excursion today after encountering difficulties in the water at a picturesque location in Sussex.
The young man, believed to hail from London, was retrieved from the water in the presence of his horrified schoolmates while on a trip to West Wittering.
He was part of a group of around 50 students who embarked on the coach journey.
At approximately 1pm on Tuesday, emergency services rushed to the beach following reports of a child in distress.
His classmates, visibly distraught, witnessed the incident unfold as he was airlifted to the hospital.
A statement from Sussex Police indicated, ‘Emergency services and HM Coastguard were alerted to concerns for a young man’s safety in the sea off West Wittering beach around 1pm on Tuesday, July 2.’
‘A 17-year-old student was airlifted to the hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.
‘His family has been notified.
‘An inquiry has been initiated to comprehend the complete circumstances of the incident.’
The Metropolitan Police officers informed the parents of the student.
An ambulance spokesperson confirmed that the student was directly airlifted to the hospital by the Coast Guard.
