Fears of a potential military coup are mounting in Bolivia after the army took control of the central square in the capital and an armoured vehicle forcefully entered the presidential palace.
President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, expressed concerns over an “irregular” troop deployment and urged for the preservation of “democratic values” on X, as footage aired on Bolivian television revealed two tanks and a group of soldiers stationed in front of the government palace in La Paz.
Former Bolivian leader, Evo Morales, condemned the military mobilization at Murillo square outside the palace in a post on X, accusing it of being a coup “in progress”.
The army’s general commander, Juan Jose Zuniga, who was present at the square, verified the movement of military personnel and denounced the situation, stating, “We are appalled by this situation, it has to stop.”
He voiced concerns about “threats to democracy” during a televised address, though he did not provide further details.
